OUR PHILOSOPHY
RESIDENT-LED CARE. FACULTY-MENTORED JUDGMENT.
SCDC exists for patients who need comprehensive dental care and often face financial, transportation and access barriers to it. When residents own their patients' care from diagnosis to completion, with experienced faculty beside them, patients get high-quality treatment and residents build the clinical judgment to manage complex cases for the rest of their careers.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
FOUR PRINCIPLES BEHIND THE PROGRAM
01
Patient ownership
Your own cases drive your education: treatment planning, weekly case review and faculty guidance are tied directly to the patients you treat.
04
Community first
As a safety-net clinic, we serve neighbors who might otherwise go without care, and we graduate dentists who carry that service mindset into practice.
02
Mentorship as peers
All treatment receives faculty sign-off, and faculty respect your treatment decisions while offering their expertise every step of the way.
03
Ideal care, real constraints
Residents learn to balance ideal care, patient expectations and real-world financial limits so every patient leaves with high-quality treatment that fits their life.
“Honestly, I thought I’d be annoyed by this level of oversight, but its been a tremendous learning experience getting to go over all the crazy complex treatment plans with a faculty member who treats you like a peer.”
Olivia Trombly, DDS Class of 2026 UNC Adams

AN HONEST LOOK, FROM OUR RESIDENTS
YOU’LL THRIVE IF …
“You will be given the freedom to learn and try as much dentistry as you would like.”
You are flexible and proactive. Schedules can change quickly, and patients may return after long gaps ready to finish treatment.
Quotes from the Class of 2026.
You may struggle if…
“If you are not confident in your dental school bread and butter and extraction skills, this residency is too fast-paced for you.”
